
Dr. Balgis Osman Elasha is a distinguished forester with a PhD in Forestry and a master’s degree in environmental science. With over 20 years of experience, she specializes in climate change mitigation and adaptation, natural resource management, renewable energy, and green growth. Her work particularly emphasizes the human dimensions of global environmental changes and their implications for sustainable development.
Dr. Balgis has been recognized for her outstanding contributions to environmental sustainability, winning the UNEP Champions of the Earth Award in 2008. She was also a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Lead Authors, part of the team awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. In 2011, she received the Highest Achievement Medal from the Government of Sudan.
Throughout her career, Dr. Balgis has conducted and supervised numerous research projects, publishing over 45 peer-reviewed articles, reports, and books. She is actively involved in various professional networks in the fields of conservation and sustainable development, including IUFRO, IAASTD, and IPBES. Additionally, she has served on multiple scientific committees and boards, furthering her impact on global environmental initiatives.
